March, 2005. Question: How much flaxseed should I eat?

Answer: Although there is no recommended Daily Value for flaxseed consumption, people often eat flaxseed because it is the highest plant source of ALA omega-3 fatty acids. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved an Omega-3 Content Nutrient Claim covering three omega-3 fatty acids: ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).

Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is a type of essential omega-3 fatty acid that your body cannot produce, but is vital to good health. Flaxseed is an excellent source for obtaining ALA omega-3s. The FDA established a minimum recommended Daily Value for ALA Omega-3 at 1,300mg per day. There was no upper-limit established for omega-3 consumption in the form of ALA.

Zoe’s Cereals and Bars are an excellent source of ALA Omega-3. Depending on the flavor, Zoe’s Cereals and Bars contain 600-1500mg of ALA Omega-3 per serving.
